Bryan Toney
Director, North Carolina Entrepreneurship Center
Bryan Toney currently serves as Director of the North Carolina Entrepreneurship Center at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  Since he joined UNCG in 2011, he has driven the development of several new co-curricular and outreach programs including Growing Entrepreneurs by Mentoring Students (GEMS), the 2 Minutes to Win It business idea competition, UNCG Entrepreneur Day, and the Entrepreneurial Journeys monthly speaker series.  He is also actively involved in numerous local, regional and statewide planning efforts that support entrepreneurship locally and globally. 

Prior to moving to Greensboro, he founded the Center for Entrepreneurship at Appalachian State University in 2006 where he led the development of new academic, co-curricular and outreach activities including a concentration and minor in entrepreneurship, the Carole Moore McLeod Entrepreneur Summit, the Young Entrepreneurs Symposium, the Dale Tweedy Mentoring Program for Entrepreneur Scholars, the Pitch Your Idea in 90 Seconds student business idea contest, the Student Entrepreneur and the Year Award, the Start Your Own Business community workshop series and the Association of Student Entrepreneurs club.  In addition, he led the entrepreneurship and global business portions of the Martha Guy Summer Institute for Future Business Leaders, a three week long summer camp for rising high school seniors from across the state. He also traveled to more than two dozen countries, developing joint courses in international entrepreneurship, leading student groups abroad, teaching undergraduate and graduate level entrepreneurship courses in Europe and Asia and developing faculty and student exchanges. 

Prior to joining Appalachian State, Bryan Toney was the Entrepreneur-in-Residence for the School of Management at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he taught courses and developed new educational and networking programs for high growth businesses. 
Bryan Toney began his career as founder and CEO of Information Management Inc., a custom software development company based in Atlanta, which he grew to 25 employees before selling it to private investors.

He holds a M.S. in Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee.

Dianne H.B. Welsh or 336.256.8507

DIANNE H.B. WELSH is the Hayes Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship and North Carolina Entrepreneurship Center Founder and Director at The University of North Carolina Greensboro. She was previously an endowed chair at two universities and started two successful entrepreneurship centers. Dianne is a recognized scholar in entrepreneurship, family business, and franchising. Global Entrepreneurship, her book with Shawn Carraher, Ph.D., premiered summer 2009.  She has written four books on international franchising.

Dianne received her Ph.D. from The University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is a Family Business Certified Advisor by the Family Firm Institute, Senior Professional in Human Resources by the Society of Human Resource Management, and a Certified Small Business Counselor by the Small Business Institute. Dianne is the Past President of the U.S. Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and serves on the board of the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Center Directors' Association. She was a Presidential Appointee to the Board of Visitors for the U.S. Air Force Academy, a member of the Defense Advisory Committee for Women in the Services (DACOWITS).

She has owned four successful businesses. From an early age, Dianne had the opportunity to work in many different roles in her family's business, Boyt Division Welsh Sporting Goods.  Her father, Holden Welsh, Sr. revolutionized the luggage industry when he created the first soft-sided luggage in 1963.

Her favorite quote and advice to students is from Winston Churchill, "Never give in-never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in."

Assistant Director


Jan Szelkowski or 336.256.8649

Jan Szelkowski is the Assistant Director for the North Carolina Entrepreneurship Center.  She is the point of contact for scheduling meetings with the SCORE and SBTDC advisors, as well as information about the Southern Entrepreneurship in the Arts Conference, (SEA) , Growing Entrepreneurs by Mentoring Students (GEMS) and other NCEC events.

Jan is a graduate of the Bryan School of Business and Economics at UNCG. She has several years of corporate and small business experience and currently assists her husband, Frank, in an entrepreneurial venture called Bears Head Investments, LLC.
